We tried to walk a fine line between raising awareness for brain cancer but also maintaining that anonymity and just being “us”. We still went about our dreams despite Mike's diagnosis and tried to do normal things too. There were adjustments we needed to make due to some limitations along the way, but it’s all just a lifestyle change. We still wanted to be Mike and Mary and still wanted to do things with our friends and family.
That's where a big piece of being able to openly communicate with family, friends and your employer about your health, what you want and what your needs are. We learned that if we set the stage about what we needed, then we had a good chance of maintaining normalcy in our lives and not letting the cancer define who we were.
